Tones are chosen to paint walls, combine furnishings or finalize a general aesthetic. However, in Casa Seis Patios, developed by VOID in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, color was understood from the beginning as a spatial tool. It did not arrive to cover surfaces: it was conceived from the beginning to produce atmospheres, guide perception and reinforce the relationship between architecture and landscape.

When color participates from the conceptual stage, it stops being an ornament and becomes a sensory structure. It can expand a space, make it more intimate, generate pause, activate energy or visually connect with the exterior nature.

For this reason, speaking about color as architecture in Casa Seis Patios is speaking about how real experiences are organized within the home and integrated with a broader vision of regenerative architecture, where each decision seeks to improve the relationship between people, surroundings and well-being.

In addition, the project demonstrates that a house can be functional and, at the same time, deeply emotional.

Casa Seis Patios: How is a home conceived as a habitable experience?

Casa Seis Patios was born from a singular commission: to design a residence with pure volumetry of contemporary Mediterranean inspiration for an art lover seeking an intimate relationship between daily life, contemplation and natural landscape. The challenge was clear from the beginning: to bring that sensitivity to the tropics without losing either the purity of the language or the logic of the place.

From the beginning, the home was understood as a sequence of spaces where sensitivity had to guide each journey. The six patios distributed throughout the project are not simply voids between walls: they are the protagonists. Each one allows the entry of light, natural ventilation, green views and a different pause within the experience of inhabiting.

The house is not experienced as a closed volume, but as a collection of moments connected by air, shade, vegetation and color. The connection with the surroundings does not depend solely on opening windows or incorporating gardens — it depends on how the interiors receive tropical light, how they dialogue with the exterior greens and how they generate emotional continuity with the landscape of Guanacaste.

For this reason, color becomes a bridge between interior and exterior.

Color as architecture: How are sensations constructed instead of only surfaces?

There is a clear difference between decorating with color and designing with color.

When it is used as decoration, color appears at the end of the process. When it is used as architecture, it participates in essential decisions:

• Defines spatial hierarchies
• Marks transitions between environments
• Modifies the perception of scale
• Emphasizes natural light
• Generates intimacy or openness
• Reinforces the identity of the project

In Casa Seis Patios, the colors were not chosen because “they look beautiful together.” They were selected for what they make people feel.

A deep tone can make a bathroom more immersive. A warm wall makes a corridor more welcoming. A light plane visually expands a social space.

That ability to transform experiences makes color as architecture a powerful and, many times, underestimated tool.

According to research on spatial perception, color directly influences how we remember a space and how we interpret its dimensions.

Emotional expression: the house as a daily atmosphere

All architecture communicates something, even when it does not intend to. Some houses convey neutrality. Others order. Others distance. Casa Seis Patios proposes sensitivity.

The home uses color to generate emotional expression without falling into excess. It does not seek gratuitous spectacularity, but rather moments that accompany daily life.

This can be felt in small gestures:

• An intense and enveloping bathroom
• A luminous patio that conveys calm
• A corridor with chromatic contrast that activates the journey
• A room where color reduces visual noise and favors rest

Emotion here is not understood as drama, but as quality of experience.

Instead of assuming that only the living room or kitchen deserve attention, the project extends design intention to secondary spaces such as hallways, bathrooms and transition zones. Some of the most memorable and intimate moments of the house appear there.

This reveals an important idea: inhabiting occurs throughout the entire house, not only in its protagonist spaces.

The light of Guanacaste and the living relationship of color

Designing color in Guanacaste requires understanding the local light. It is neither neutral nor constant. It is intense, direct and changing throughout the day.

A tone that seems serene in the morning can become vibrant in the afternoon. A warm wall can reflect golden hues at sunset. A dark surface can gain depth with grazing shadow.

Casa Seis Patios took these variables as part of the design. Instead of seeking static colors, the project chose tones capable of transforming with time and the hour.

This makes the house dynamic. Each day modifies the interior perception without the need to move a single object.

The connection with the surroundings also happens this way: when natural light actively participates in architecture.

How does the use of sober materials amplify color?

The project’s material palette is restrained: local wood, exposed concrete, metal and glass.

This decision is strategic. Sober materials allow color to breathe without competing with too much visual texture.

On smooth concrete, a saturated tone acquires a different presence. Next to natural wood, a color can feel warmer. In front of glass and the landscape, it can act as a frame.

In other words, color works with matter.

From the logic of regenerative architecture, this restraint also makes sense: less material excess, greater spatial clarity, greater visual durability and a more honest relationship between resources and experience.

The patios and the connection with the surroundings

The six patios introduce vegetation into multiple areas of the home. This radically changes the way of inhabiting.

Green stops being a distant view and becomes an everyday presence. It appears when leaving a shower, when walking through a corridor or when opening an interior door.

In several spaces, the color of the walls was conceived in direct relationship with that vegetation. The chromatic contrast intensifies both the architecture and the plants.

For this reason, the relationship with the surroundings does not depend only on the size of windows or square meters of garden. It also depends on how interior and landscape enhance one another.

The house does not look at nature from the outside. It coexists with it.

Regenerative architecture and human well-being

At times, regenerative architecture is reduced to energy, water or technical sustainability. All of this matters, but it is not enough.

A truly regenerative project also improves the human experience:

• Reduces stress through daily contact with nature
• Favors natural ventilation and lighting
• Generates emotional well-being
• Uses honest and durable materials
• Creates healthier bonds between person and place

Casa Seis Patios demonstrates that beauty, emotion and environmental responsibility can coexist.

Here, color does not contradict sustainability. It strengthens it. Because it turns the house into a cherished, memorable and valuable space for those who inhabit it. And what is valued is usually cared for.

Why is it important to design memory, not only square meters?

Many homes function correctly, but few remain in memory.

Casa Seis Patios commits to the memorable. Not from extravagance, but from sensitive decisions: a sequence of patios, changing light, nearby vegetation and color used with intention.

True luxury is not always found in size or cost. Sometimes it lies in feeling that a house responds to life with intelligence, emotion and everyday beauty.

And there lies the value of using color as an architectural tool: transforming built space into a living experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

       <div class="e-n-accordion" aria-label="Accordion.
